Game time is here, which means you need to step up your game time cleaning habits. Why? Because your home will soon be filled with friends and family, all of whom are ready to sit down, chow down and get their “football fix” in your living room. Are you sure you’re not inviting them into a toxic environment? If you use everyday household cleaning products—here’s a list of some dangerous ones—you may be exposing your guests to harmful chemicals. You’ll want to use non-tocix chemicals to ensure your family and friends are safe and sound.
You put a lot of effort into your juicy chicken wings, and you need to be able to say the same about your game time cleaning routine. Not only will your friends and family appreciate it, but you can rest easy knowing they’ll be enjoying their favorite sport in a clean and safe environment. Not sure how to get started with your non-toxic cleaning? Have little time before the gang arrives? Here are some helpful tips on how to “green” your cleaning chores before the big game:
Fall in Love with Vinegar: Vinegar is your go-to all-purpose green cleaner! Blend vinegar in water for a wonderful glass cleaner, or combine with baking soda and water to clean countertops. Vinegar is also a disinfectant, use it to clean mold, or mildew in humidifier to increase your indoor air quality.
Do More with Baking Soda: You can use baking soda on your toilet brush to wash your toilet or use some on your carpets to help kill odors. Since baking soda is non-toxic and helps absorb bad smells, leave an opened box in your refrigerator to keep foul smells at bay and swap out the box every few months.
Use Your Essential Oils: Essential oils are fabulous for treating sicknesses, minor cuts, or even helping you decrease anxiety, but did you know they can help you clean your home, too? Add some rosemary or sweet orange oil to a homemade green cleaning solution for some yummy scents. Or you can use tea tree oil or eucalyptus to help kill germs that cause stomach bugs, and influenza. Essential oils are non-toxics, which is a plus.
Cook Yummy Smells: Air fresheners only cover smells, plus they have that chemically smell. To add aromatic scents to your home, place cinnamon and apples in a pot and bring them to a boil. Once they’ve reach a boil, lower the heat and let them simmer. You can also include a few drops of essential oils.
In a “rush” to tidy up your place in a non-toxic fashion before the game? Here are some best practices to enhance your game time cleaning routine from our friends at thespruce.com:
Keep Supplies Together: The number one rule for game time cleaning is to have quick and easy access to your tools and supplies. When it’s time to clean, it zaps all of your motivation when you have to hunt for needed supplies. Consider creating a cleaning caddy for different areas of your home. You’ll always have your cleaning supplies right where you need them.
Pump Up the Music: Music can make a big difference in how quickly you’re able to clean before game time. A good mix of cleanup music is a playlist of high energy songs that will make you feel great. Using music can help you to move more quickly, all while giving a feeling of fun to your chores. Tip: Shut the blinds if your likely to bust a move that you don’t want the neighbors knowing you have.
Start With Your Least Favorite Room: The room you always leave until last is the best one to start in. Procrastinating on the rooms we hate cleaning will only make you feel worse when you’ve cleaned other rooms in your home. Do the most difficult and annoying areas of your house first when you are most motivated.
